What to Do During a Dental Emergency (Before You Arrive)
Dental emergencies can be scary, but panicking won’t help. If you have an emergency – please remain calm, perform the first aid steps from below, and see a dentist as soon as possible.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the chewing part), not the root. Rinse it gently with water do not scrub it. If you can, place it back into the socket and hold it there with a clean cloth. If not, store it in a cup of milk or your own saliva and get to our office immediately. Time is critical a tooth re-implanted within an hour has the best chance of survival.
Severe Toothache
Rinse with warm salt water. Try not to apply heat to the area. You can take over-the-counter pain medication (ibuprofen is generally more effective for dental pain than acetaminophen). Do not place aspirin directly on the gum it can cause tissue damage. Call us to get seen the same day.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Apply a cold compress to your cheek to reduce swelling. If you find any broken pieces, keep them in cold water and bring them with you. Call us right away even if there's no pain, a crack left untreated can worsen quickly.
Lost Crown or Filling
Don't panic. You can apply a small amount of dental cement (available at most pharmacies) or even a piece of sugar-free gum over the exposed area temporarily. Avoid chewing on that side. Call us to schedule a same-day or next-day repair.

An abscess is a serious infection that can spread to your jaw, neck, and head if left untreated. Signs include a pimple-like bump on the gum, persistent throbbing pain, fever, or facial swelling. Rinse with mild salt water several times a day and call us immediately. Do not ignore an abscess.
Soft Tissue Injury (Lip, Tongue, Cheek)
Rinse with mild salt water. Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze to stop bleeding. If bleeding doesn't slow after 15–20 minutes or the wound is deep, go to an emergency room.
